Coevolutionary Genetics

چکیده
The genetic polymorphism maintained by host-pathogen coevolution is analyzed in a multilocus model. The model assumes gene-for-gene interactions of the type commonly observed between host plants and their fungal pathogens. Unstable (epidemic) systems maintain more resistance genes, fewer virulence genes, and less overall genetic diversity than stable (endemic) diseases. The stability of the system depends primarily on demographic parameters, such as the pathogen's intrinsic rate of increase, rather than genetic parameters, such as the costs of resistance and virulence. At equilibrium the model predicts that the number of resistance alleles in each host plant follows a binomial distribution that depends on the cost to the pathogen for carrying virulence alleles. Similarly, the number of virulence alleles in each pathogen spore follows a binomial distribution that depends on one minus the cost to the host for carrying resistance alleles. Data from wild populations match the predicted binomial distributions.

Host-parasite coevolutionary dynamics with generalized success/failure infection genetics.
Host-parasite infection genetics can be more complex than envisioned by classic models such as the gene-for-gene or matching-allele models. By means of a mathematical model, I investigate the coevolutionary dynamics arising from a large set of generalized models of infection genetics in which hosts are either fully resistant or fully susceptible to a parasite, depending on the genotype of both ...

Gene-culture coevolutionary theory is a branch of theoretical population genetics that models the transmission of genes and cultural traits from one generation to the next, exploring how they interact. These models have been employed to examine the adaptive advantages of learning and culture, to investigate the forces of cultural change, to partition the variance in complex human behavioral and...

Host-parasite coevolution and patterns of adaptation across time and space.
The description of coevolutionary dynamics requires a characterization of the evolutionary dynamics of both the parasite and its host. However, a thorough description of the underlying genetics of the coevolutionary process is often extremely difficult to carry out. We propose that measures of adaptation (mean population fitness) across time or space may represent a feasible alternative approac...
متن کاملNew frontiers in the study of human cultural and genetic evolution.
In this review, we discuss the dynamic linkages between culture and the genetic evolution of the human species. We begin by briefly describing the framework of gene-culture coevolutionary (or dual-inheritance) models for human evolutionary change. Until recently, the literature on gene-culture coevolution was composed primarily of mathematical models and formalized theory describing the complex...
متن کاملCoevolutionary genetic variation in the legume-rhizobium transcriptome.
Coevolutionary change requires reciprocal selection between interacting species, where the partner genotypes that are favoured in one species depend on the genetic composition of the interacting species. Coevolutionary genetic variation is manifested as genotype × genotype (G × G) interactions for fitness in interspecific interactions. Although quantitative genetic approaches have revealed abun...
